How IELTS Writing Task 1 is scored: Band 5 to 8 with helpful tips
In this post you’re going to learn how your IELTS Writing Task 1 is marked and the difference between bands like 5, 6, 7, and 8. Examiner marks IELTS Writing Task 1 based on 4 Assessment Criteria i.e. Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resources/Range of Vocabulary, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. You’ll also find useful tips to increase your Band Score fulfilling the requirements of each Marking Criteria.
IELTS Writing Task 1 marking criteria
- Task Achievement (TA) which accounts for 25% of total marks
- Coherence and Cohesion (CC) – accounts for 25%
- Lexical Resources (LR) – accounts for 25%, and
- Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA) accounts for 25% as well.
- Task Achievement:Â The examiner will assess your Task Achievement score looking at your introduction, overview, detail and accuracy. Look at the following table:

Tips to increase your score:
- check and analyse the chart, and identify all key features
- highlight all key features in an overview
- support your body paragraph if numbers and data
- avoid putting wrong information
- don’t include conclusion
- write a report based on facts
- write more than 150 words like 165 words
