IELTS AC Writing Task 1: How to write Task 1

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 entails you to write a report on a given graph, chart, map or table. You have to write at least 150 words.

In your writing, there should be at least 3 paragraphs: Introduction, Overview, and Body paragraph(s).

Introduction: You’ve to paraphrase the question statement and graph information.

Overview: Key features of the graph (Highlighted / major information changes)

Body paragraph(s): Major details with comparisons followed by minor details (if necessary)

Key phrases for AC writing Task 1:

Overall, To begin with, Next, After that, On the contrary, However, Finally, Moreover, As opposed to, In contrast, Compared to etc.

Example: To begin with, the percentage of 65+ people in Bangladesh increased over the last decades, while it declined moderately for neighboring country, India. 

Some essential verbs for AC Task 1:

For increasing: Surged, Rocketed, Boomed, Doubled, peaked at, rose, increased, went up, climbed to

For decreasing: Plummeted, dropped, fell, declined, decreased, went down, dipped etc.

AC Task 1 Vocabulary:

Degree of change: Rapid-rapidly, quick-quickly, sharp-sharply, dramatic-dramatically, minimal-minimally

Approximation: About, around, nearly, approximately, just under/over, well under/over etc.
