IELTS Speaking Phrases: Unusual Phrases/Vocabularies

In the IELTS Speaking test, if you want to get higher band score, you have to use speaking phrases and higher band vocabularies. The more phrases you can use in the IELTS Speaking Test, the higher the band score you will get in the exam. So, in this post, we’re going to discuss some unusual phrases to boost your IELTS Speaking skills.

Here you go:

  • SIZE UP = to measure someone’s ability/confidence/value (কারো দক্ষতা, সক্ষমতা, মূল্য পরিমাপ করা). For example: When you face an interview, company sizes you up. He sizes the up the someone before accepting them as friends.
  • DISH OUT = distribute on plate/plates before the meal. For example: They dished out the food before the host’s arrival.
  • RAT OUT = to expose (প্রকাশ করা) The newspaper rats out the secret./ We should not rat out others secret in public.
  • DIG IN = help yourself to do/take/consume/eat. For example, Ok, everybody let’s dig in the food today. The waiters are out, so dig in the dish.
  • WATER DOWN/DUMB= to make sth simpler/weaker. For example: Let’s water down the unusual phrases to boost your IELTS Speaking.
  • FARM OUT= to out source. For example, Canada usually farms out the tech support to places like India.
  • SUCK UP = to flatter. For example: This young new executive sucks up his bosses a lot, that’s why others don’t like him.
  • SUCK IT UP = to take it in and not complaining (tolerating). For example: Suck it up and finish your job in time.
  • MAN UP = to be a man (don’t complain/be afraid and be confident). For example: A man is complaining about his life status, you can say: Come on man, just man up.
  • WEIGH IN = to offer your own opinion/suggestion/to have your saying. For example: The company asked its employees to weigh in the changes needs to take.
  • BEAT TO = to do something first (before others). For example: I was going to suggest that idea to the boss today, but unfortunately one of my co-workers beat me to it.
