IELTS Writing Task 2 Question and Model Essay:
IELTS Writing Task 2 is the second part of the writing test, where you are presented with a point of view, argument or problem and asked to write an essay in response. Your essay should be in a formal style, at least 250 words in length and you should aim to complete it in under 40 minutes.
9 Band Essay
Universities must accept an equal number of students in each subject.
How much do you agree or disagree?
9 Band Model Answer:
In my opinion, men and women should have the same opportunities for education. However, I do not agree with the idea of acknowledging equal proportions of each sex in all university subjects.
Having the same number of men and women in all courses is simply unrealistic. The number of students in any course depends on the requests received by the institution. If a university decide to take courses with the same number of men and women, it would need enough candidates of each sex. In fact, many classes are more popular with one sex than another, and it would not be practical to aim for equal proportions. For example, nursing classes tend to attract more female candidates, and it would be difficult to follow if 50% of the spaces needed for men were needed.
In addition to the practical concerns expressed above, I also think it would be unfair to base admissions on such university courses. Universities must continue to select the best aspirants for each course according to their qualifications. In this way, men and women have the same opportunities and candidates know they will succeed if they work hard to get good marks at school. If a student is the best candidate for a place in a course, it is probably wrong to reject it in favor of a student with lower or lower grades.
To recapitulate, selecting the students for university admission ought to be focused on merit and it would be unreasonable and partial to switch to a selection procedure based on gender.
